Hobo
“Hobo” was first used to describe migrant workers in America at the end of the 19th century, who were essentially homeless and rode freight trains looking for work, carrying their belongings in a sack tied around a bindle stick. It's this marker that fashion borrowed to describe a slouchy bag with a handle.

Hand
The first modern day purse was envisioned in 1841 by a great entrepreneur of the time named Samuel Parkinson. Parkinson requested a set of travelling cases and trunks for his travels and also a case for his wife.

Tote
During the 1940's when US company LL Bean created their first bag for carrying ice and wood. This sturdy, practical, canvas “ice bag” was made to last. ... Designer Bonnie Cashin created her Cashin carry tote.

Duffel
Duffel bags (also called duffel bags) are named after the town where their thick cloth was originally made. The town of Duffel is in Belgium, near Antwerp, and its production of the bag's coarse, woolen cloth dates back to the mid-17th century.

Messenger
The history of the modern messenger bag actually starts in the 1950's. De Martini Globe Canvas Company designed the bag to be used by line workers. Messenger bags were made to accommodate all the tools they needed to work with, so the bags were very spacious and functional.

Backpack
Lloyd Nelson, known as the father of outdoor sports, was hiking around Alaska with a bag made from sticks and seal skin. Two years later he received a patent for a backpack with a wooden frame called the Trapper Nelson, which was mass produced and sold all over the country in 1922.

Satchel
The leather satchel has been around for centuries as a means of carrying stuff – it even crops up in Roman times under the name of Loculus which literally means 'little place' in Latin. ... Of course they were popular in the mid 20th century as practical smart school bags.

Doctors
In use for more than a century, this mid-nineteenth century bag was created by J. G. Beard, a London leather dealer, who named it after William Gladstone, the British Prime Minister, whom he greatly admired. This bag opened widely from the top and enabled the doctor to take out whatever was needed with relative ease.

Laptop
A laptop bag is a special type of backpack that has specific compartments for the laptop, the mouse, adapter, and other items of use.

Bucket
The modern bucket bags started its real form from the champagne bottles' bag produced by Louis Vuitton. This fabulous bag was designed to carry 5 bottles of champagne at a time safely. In 1940, Vogue started featuring larger bucket bags and these bags were considered practical enough to be used in wartime.

Bowler
A bowler bag is a medium sized bag which is accompanied by two handles that are long enough to slip over the forearm up until the elbow. Bowler bags often have many compartments in the interior and normally worn as part of day time attire.

Wristlet
Wristlet, a small handbag with a short carrying strap resembling a bracelet. Wristwatch, originally known as a wrist-let when the vast majority of personal timepieces were pocket watches. Trench watch, a transitional design between the pocket watch and the wristwatch used by the military during World War I.

Pouch
The original stand-up pouch was invented in 1963 by Louis Doyen the CEO of the French machinery manufacturer Thimonnier, and then gained US Patent 3,380,646 in 1968 for the Doyen stand-up pouch design.

Minaudiere
According to press articles of the time the minaudière was invented by Van Cleef & Arpels in 1934. Charles Arpels was inspired by watching Florence Gould, third wife of philanthropist Frank Jay Gould, toss several small, loose makeup items into a tin box.

Saddle
The classic pouch-like saddlebag is a good-example of form meeting function. Its narrow, almost semicircular body fits neatly against the horse’s flanks – any longer and it would risk impeding the horse’s movement – and the leather has to be thick and sturdy enough to withstand the constant scuffing and chafing.

Barrel
The barrel or cylinder duffel bag emerged in the 1970's as a simple and easy design for everyday carry, and especially with synthetic materials.

Basket
But wicker’s most enduring style moment came in the late 1960's and 1970's, when Jane Birkin made a picnic basket her signature accessory when she was out and about in Paris, Cannes and London.
