A pendant is a loose-hanging piece of jewelry, generally attached by a small loop to a necklace, which may be known as a "pendant necklace".

Choker
A snug clasp around your neck, the choker necklace can be made of metal, ribbon, velvet and even leather. It's reported that Queen Alexandra of Denmark (1844–1925) wore a dog collar necklace to hide a scar on her neck.

Collar
A necklace that lies flat to the body rather than hanging freely and rests directly above the collar bone.

Opera
An "opera" necklace is about 28 to 32 inches long. This rests around the bottom of a woman's rib-cage. Some people may use this length to wrap around twice, making it look like a double choker style necklace. Anything longer than 32 inches is a "rope" necklace.

Matinee necklaces are between 22”-24” in length and can easily be paired with formal attire.

Lockets evolved from ancient amulets. European designs for lockets appear to date to the 16th century, when small pendants were worn to conceal good luck charms,painted portraits, small fabric squares soaked in perfume to ward off the poor smells on public thoroughfares.

A lariat necklace is a long line or string of materials--usually measuring between 30 to 50 inches--without a clasp or closure on either end. Each end of the length is often completed with a decorative element such as a drop or tassel.

Riviere necklace is essentially precious or semi-precious gemstones stringed together with similar dimensions or with smooth graduation in size. They are usually between 14-16” in length.

A festoon by definition is a garland of flowers, ribbons, or leaves hung in a curve as a decorative element or incorporated as an architectural feature. ... The festoon necklace became popular during the Georgian period (1714–1830's), carrying over into the Victorian era (1837–1901).

Torcs can be made from twisted strands of metal with some later examples made from solid metal or even hollow tubes. Most Torc’s are open at one side, although a few designs had hook and ring closures or interlocking catches to close them.
